Slim Jim is a terrific dwarf aubergine variety from Italy – an award-winning all-rounder in the patio vegetable category. Its dark-purple foliage and clusters of long, slim, purple fruits make it a perfect choice for ornamental and decorative gardens. Even though the variety’s origins are not clear, most accounts agree that it is southern-Italian in origin and was first introduced by Italian seed company Fratelli Ingegnoli. Aubergines originated in Asia, being recorded first in the 6th century Chinese agricultural treatise Qímín Yàoshù. The plant was introduced to the Mediterranean region by Arabs in the Middle Ages. Aubergines have a somewhat unusual reputation in Italy – historically, it was thought that the whole plant could cause insanity. The name melanzana is derived from mela insana, meaning ‘insane apple’!

Petit Gris de Rennes is an ever-so-sweet, juicy little melon with bright orange flesh. Its name translates as “little grey” for the dark green appearance of its skin before ripening. Originally cultivated in the garden of the Bishop of Rennes nearly four hundred years ago, it is now included in Slow Food’s Ark of Taste. Its astonishing survival to the present day is unquestionably due to its brown-sugar sweetness and intense flavour, making it la crème de la crème of French melons. This easy-to-grow heirloom variety arrives early, making it a good choice for northern gardens with short seasons. It’s perfect for smaller gardens and containers, with compact vines that grow to only 90 cm and produce good yields.

Wildfire/Wasabi is a perennial variety of Wild Rocket, with deep green, serrated foliage that makes an attractive garnish for any dish and mesclun-style salad. An alternative to the usual Rocket, Wild Rocket has a distinctive wasabi taste and its young leaves can be picked in succession. Despite the fact that Wasabi Rocket has never actually met its powerfully punchy namesake, the Wasabi Root, and that it doesn't quite bring tears to your eyes in the same way that the reduced root paste, a popular sushi accompaniment, does, it nevertheless adds a certain dose of horseradish heat to everyday meals.
