Der Jalapeño-Chili wurde nach der Stadt Xalapa in Mexiko benannt, wo er traditionell angebaut wurde. In Mexiko ist er auch als chile gordo ("dicker Chili") und cuaresmeño bekannt, was seine Bedeutung in der Fastenküche zeigt. Der erste historische Hinweis auf den Jalapeño (in der geräucherten Variante als Chipotle) stammt aus dem Florentiner Kodex aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Der Ethnograph Bernardino de Sahagún beschrieb darin die Beliebtheit von Chilis bei den Azteken, die sie in der Küche, als Medizin und bei kulturellen Zeremonien verwendeten.
